Founded by vocalist/bassist
Karen Kanan Corrêa and drummer
Sivan Harlap -- both former members of
the Hissyfits --
Demander traffics in the same indie rock circle as
Sleater-Kinney and
the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. The group took shape in New York City in 2005, with guitarist
Jared Scott rounding out the co-ed lineup. After releasing a self-titled EP,
Demander increased its public profile by touring alongside bands like
the Hold Steady,
Morningwood, and
the Giraffes. The group briefly retired to Brooklyn to record a debut LP, The Unkindness of Ravens, which was issued in limited quantities in 2007. A large-scale release followed one year later, and
Demander spent the first half of 2009 recording a second album, Future Brite, which ultimately appeared in 2010.
