Album Review

It's pretty close to impossible to go wrong with any Curtis Mayfield collection, but to call this one definitive is stretching things quite a bit. True, it has the three big pop-funk hits from 1972's Superfly ("Pusherman," "Freddie's Dead," and the title tune), plus the beautiful and brilliant love song "So in Love" from 1975, but it lacks anything from Mayfield's Impressions years, a time when his writing and singing were every bit as impressive, and maybe even more so. Again, any Curtis Mayfield is better than no Curtis Mayfield, but don't fool yourself into thinking that this is all there is to the story.
