Album Review

The first week of December 1977 was a momentous one for listeners to John Peel's BBC radio show, as Sham 69 rolled into the studio for their first -- and last -- session, an assault that captured one of the year's most exciting live bands blazing through no less than five of their greatest anthems, beginning with a career-best "Borstal Breakout." Bootleg tapes of the session have circulated for years; this disc, however, marks their official debut and the performance sounds as inflammatory today as it ever did in the past. The same can be said for the nine tracks that complete this disc, a 1979 live show that had hitherto seen the light of day as BBC Radio 1 in Concert, and which rounds up a very tight, very powerful live show from the very dog days of the group's career. Indeed, of all the live Sham 69 albums out there, this is the only one that comes even close to capturing the group's true abilities, as opposed to the chaos that normally ensued at their shows.
