Album Review

John Hicks and Elise Wood, who first collaborated on a recording in the early '80s, omit the rest of the rhythm section this time around and delve into a host of standards on this piano-flute duo session. Their musical partnership also evolved into their marriage in 2001, so it's no surprise that they also jointly arranged the selections for this self-produced CD for their own Hi Wood label. Wood' pronounced vibrato provides the perfect spice for Hicks' dazzling piano during "Beautiful Friendship," during which Wood adds a touch of dissonance as well. Their lyrical interpretation of Antonio Carlos Jobim's "Corcovado" and extended workout of Duke Ellington's "Sophisticated Lady" are also among the highlights. It's easy to understand why they enjoy making music together after hearing this delightful disc.
