The
Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis & Johnny Griffin Quintet always played exciting music. With two very distinctive and competitive tenor saxophonists as co-leaders, their music offered plenty of fiery trade-offs and tenor battles that generally ended up as a "tie." This CD has the six songs on the original LP,
Battle Stations, plus two slightly later tracks that were left off of the other CD reissues. On the bulk of the selections (five obscurities plus "If I Had You"),
Davis and
Griffin are joined by pianist
Norman Simmons, bassist
Victor Sproles, and drummer
Ben Riley. A lengthy "Billie's Bounce" and a brief "Theme" have pianist
Junior Mance, bassist
Larry Gales, and
Riley inspiring the tenors. Fun and stimulating music.
