Album Review

Smokey & Miho make a flawless interpretation of Baden Powell's Afro Sambas while also paying tribute to the late Brazilian composer/musician and fellow songwriter Vinícius de Moraes on their EP Tempo de Amor: Songs By Baden Powell. It's a tantalizing, stylish set of songs sung in Portuguese, and the duo are perfectionists in their musical craft. Miho Hatori is a vocal darling, a candied version of Astrud Gilberto and Petula Clark. She and Smokey Hormel shimmy in a sultry way on "Consolação" and "Canto do Caboclo Pedra Preta," while "Bocoché" shakes with a spring-like, jazzy flair. Percussionist Mauro Refosco and brass man Jon Birdsong provide a slick groove throughout Tempo de Amor, accentuating Smokey & Miho's irresistibly sweet appeal. Smokey & Miho are all class in honoring Powell and de Moraes and this particular release is an outstanding addition to any indie pop/worldbeat collection.
