Album Review

As short as it may be, Open Close Open holds a lot of artistic beauty in its bytes. The first "Open" is a textural piece made mostly of digital noises. "Close" uses a similar sound layer as a background over which is pinned a quote from one of Mahler's symphony (a slow string motif). This original juxtaposition results in a lyrical movement one could mistake for a guitar-less version of Godspeed You Black Emperor!. The second "Open" keeps some digital noises from the first track, a shorter Mahler sample from the second (just long enough to give the idea of strings, and adds a soft rhythm loop. Through these three movements, Robert Lippok plays with audio space, leaving the listener amazed at how both rich and simple the whole thing (process and result) sounds.
