Album Review

Offering up a diverse and pleasingly irregular assortment of Squeeze's hits, Master Series acts a great secondary set of the band's material. Favorites such as "Cool for Cats," "Black Coffee in Bed," "Tempted," and "Pulling Mussels" are scattered amongst lesser-known songs like "Night Nurse," "Trust," "Electric Trains," and "Third Rail," to name a few. Many of the tracks come from some of Squeeze's most inconspicuous albums from the '90s, like 1993's Some Fantastic Place; 1995's Ridiculous; or 1996's Excess Moderation, which is a mixture of B-sides and rare cuts. While these albums didn't receive a lot of attention, especially in the United States, Master Series is the perfect place to investigate some of the better tracks from those and other releases. Those who aren't longtime fans will find that there's a definite difference in the flavor of Squeeze's material when comparing their earlier work to anything that came after Babylon and On, which is exactly what makes this collection attractive. There are complete packages that contain a plethora of the band's bigger hits, for anyone who wants to familiarize themselves with Squeeze's meat and potatoes, and Master Series should be looked upon as a great follow-up to any of those sets.
