Released six months after
If You're Feeling Sinister, the
Dog on Wheels EP proves that
Belle & Sebastian's wonderful second album was no fluke. Comprised of four songs that generally sound a little fuller and have a lighter tone than those on the album, it displays
Stuart Murdoch's sly wit and flair for storytelling. If anything, his skills are deepening as his narratives are becoming more unpredictable and funnier ("My brother had confessed that he was gay/It took the heat off me for a while"). His lyrics aren't the only thing that's impressive -- the music on
Dog on Wheels is also bolder and more assured. Without abandoning the folk-rock foundation that made
If You're Feeling Sinister so effective,
Belle & Sebastian have expanded their horizons on
Dog on Wheels and their music is just as lovely and addictive.
