As could be inferred from the title,
Delivered is
Charles Gayle's fusion of propulsive free jazz with traditional gospel. Though the idea sounds unworkable,
Gayle structures the album much more than on his free-flying live dates, and
Delivered is much more focused than
Gayle's other recordings as well. His quartet (including
James Jones on piano, Gerald Benson on bass, drummer Kalil Madi) is given much room to soar on their frequent solos, but
Gayle controls the whole effort with a fine effort, on tenor sax or bass clarinet.
