Album Review

A club compilation that features the requisite dancing female and barely even lists Humphries' name on the cover, Take Home the Club is still one of the best documents of the garage king's impeccable talent for mixing and selecting records. The way the vocal tag on the opener (Colonel Abrams' "I'm Not Gonna Let") slides into the next track, the track shout-outs to Humphries favorites like Connie Harvey and Jocelyn Brown, the emphasis on solid, hook-filled tracks -- all of these make this such an exuberant, joy-filled occasion that listeners actually get a sense of the immense energy and vibes fostered in classic clubs like Humphries' own Zanzibar. Simply put, it's one of the most important, enjoyable mix albums ever released.
