Album Review

Charlie Sizemore's Back Home is rousing mix of contemporary bluegrass and straight-up country, with a host of Sizemore originals bolstering the effort. "Who Cares" and "Roller Coaster Run" are nimble, speedy bluegrass numbers, while the Sizemore country ballad "Can't Take Your Memory Away" is heartworn enough to pull a tear into your beer yet upbeat enough to keep your toe tapping. "Walking Home in the Rain" is another heart-rending ballad (and one of the best tracks here), this time drenched in pedal steel and featuring a great harmony vocal from Alison Krauss. Sizemore's deep, rich voice is an emotive instrument, and having been a singer with Ralph Stanley, he knows how to use it. Back Home has a little something for fans of mainstream and insurgent country alike. A host of notable folks, including Tim O'Brien and Claire Lynch, help out.
