This is one of guitarist Sonny Greenwich's friendlier recordings. Greenwich perfoms six originals that are mostly melodic ballads with "Far Country" being quite peaceful while "Raga" (which uses the tablas of Guy Thouin) pays tribute to Indian music in relaxed fashion. The 14 1/2-minute "Black Beauty" (which early on has some background yodelling by Ernie Nelson that is reminiscent of Leon Thomas) is the most eccentric piece but will not disturb conservative listeners and even "Free Form" (a freely improvised piece) is lyrical. In addition to Greenwich's distinctive guitar, the main soloist is James Gelfand on piano and an electric piano that is a throwback to the 1970s. Although certainly not Sonny Greenwich's most innovative set (some of his longtime fans may be disappointed at the mellow nature of the program), this CD is reasonably enjoyable in its own right.
