Album Review

One of numerous Les Brown albums with the word "Sentimental" in the title, Columbia's Sentimental Journey was a 1977 LP reissue compilation of 12 songs performed by Les Brown and his Band of Renown with vocals by Doris Day and Ronnie Chase. Sony brought it out on compact disc in 1995 without the addition of any bonus tracks, which means that you get just under 37 minutes' worth of wholesome big band pop music from the '40s. This little taste will mainly be useful for those who crave the sounds of young Doris Day backed by tidily arranged big band accompaniments. In addition to the sweetly languid title tune, the most attractive numbers are the atmospheric lounge opus "Amapola," the catchy "Broomstreet," and a swinging version of Will Bradley's "Celery Stalks at Midnight." Better compilations do exist for those who seek more than 36-minutes-and-53-seconds of Les Brown and Doris Day.
